FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault
should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree. This is especially important if you are choosing to show your
yorkie. If he/she is merely a family pet, some faults stand with correction and may be disregarded.

NOTE: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicals fully descended into the scrotum **

* In the UK it is now possible to show animals with undocked tails. As yet there is no recognised standard for the
presentation, type, length or carriage of a full tail.

** It may also be possible now in the UK to show neutered animals, providing permission has been obtained from the Kennel
Club in advance.
Differences in the American Kennel Club Breed Standard
There is very little difference in the American standard. The main differences are:

1. Neck: no mention is made in the Am. standard
2. Mouth: The Am. standard states: "the bite neither overshot nor undershot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level
bite is acceptable" No reference is made to a full mouth.

Always remember that, wherever you purchase your pup, there are no guarantees that you are buying from a good breeder.
You should always be observant when viewing a litter; the premises should be clean and the puppies should appear healthy
and lively. In search of your ideal breeder you should be looking for someone who has experience of the breed, who owns the
dam, someone who rears in the home, offers after-sales advise and is willing to take the puppies back if there are any major
problems. If you have doubts about the breeder, contact some others until you are confident you have found the best. Your
pup should have been reared with much care and devotion. When you go to buy your bundle of joy, be completely honest
about your requirements and, ultimately, be sure you want the pup! It is not easy to resist a cute bundle of fluff with those
appealing eyes, but if you are unhappy with the pup, mom, environment or breeder in any way, do not consider buying him
- you will only be disappointed with your new pet and you may incur expensive vet bills.

As  a Yorkie puppy matures, most of the dark facial hair will be replaced with tan hair. Coat texture is so important when
judging the Yorkshire Terrier in the show ring. Individual hairs must be thin and fine so that they hang properly; hair that
is too thick or too coarse will not fall straight and flat as is desired in this breed. When showing a Yorkie, a topknot is
always a must. The topknot is achieved by gathering together a triangle section of the hair (from a central point between
the eyes and the base of the ear) and fastening this with an elastic band. A bow is usually added as a finishing touch. These
little yorkie puppies shown here in this picture will soon be rewarded with the luxurious coats of their older counterparts!
Taking on a Yorkshire Terrier is a big commitment, so think carefully before making your final decision. Your families lifestyle
will influence the way your dog's character develops. Small dogs, such as the Yorkie, like to curl up on a favorite chair. The
puppy that you select should be the picture of health -- the eyes should be clear and bright, the hose wet to the touch,
and the coat soft and glossy. If your purchasing a yorkie as a gift for someone, consider a "pair" of Yorkshire Terriers, as
they are ideal pets and are community dogs. They thrive so much better when they are in the company of another Yorkie.
Badly rears pups will show many obvious signs; dirty ears may indicate mites; listlessness and dull eyes may be signs of
worms; nasal discharge may mean respiratory infection; bald patched may suggest mange or ringworm; excessive scratching
can mean fleas; and diarrhea may indicate worms or intestinal infection. There should be no enlargement of the leg joints or
any other deformities in the feet or legs, as rickets (caused by bad diet) could be present. There is no mistake with a bunch
of healthy yorkies. They will be well fed, groomed with bright & clear eyes. They should be very active, fearless little balls of
fur! Tearing around the house beating up their sisters and brothers. Hmmmm, sound familiar?

These Adolescent Yorkies can be proud of their newly acquired topknots. Usually, you can begin to tie up or "cracker" your
yorkies hair at around 5 months of age.

These are dynamite little dogs to travel with! Don't give your pet a heavy meal before the trip, but do ensure that he has a
plentiful water supply. Sometimes, airlines prefer that you fill their bowls up with ice, this is a great idea because if the
plane experiences turbulence, then the ice will remain in the bowl and melt at a slow rate.

REMEMBER, Yorkies are community dogs, they do much better in pairs. Wether you choose to purchase two yorkies with
one breeder, or a yorkie from seperate breeders, it's the ideal situation for them so that they have the company of each
other while your at work. I usually tell people to imagine themselves off on an Island only with dogs and no human contact,
that would be tough! Same goes for a dog, they are in much need for each others companionship!
