Most Yorkies that are Pets are kept with shorter cuts, 2in-4in over the whole body. Trimming their hair needs to be
done about every 3 to 4 months or so. Care should be taken to keep the coat tangle free by combing out your Yorkie
every day. It takes about 1 hour or so to completely bathe and groom your
Yorkie. Knots and tangles occur mostly in
certain spots such as under the front legs, the underneath, and behind the ears.

Teach your Yorkie Puppy to learn to lie on a grooming table or on your lap, with his/her head towards you. Gently ease
out the knots with your fingers and remove the loose bits of matts. Gently comb out with a steel comb starting with the
troubled spots first. If the coat is not taken care of properly and allowed to grow long it will only matt and tangle, and it
will become terribly painful for your Yorkie. Most Yorkie's love to be
groomed, and are so small that it only take a bit of
your time to groom him/her everyday.

Brushing Your Yorkie

A throrough Brushing, Brush with the growth of the hair to clean the surface coat. Brush stiffly against the hair to
clean the undercoat and massage the skin. But do so gently. Brush the hair back to the original position. This may be
fun and pleasant for your Yorkie.

Grooming Supplies

Natural Bristle Brush

Wide Narrow Comb

Spray Bottles for the coat

Baby powder or Corn Starch

Tangle Remover spray or lotion

Hair Control. If your Yorkie’s coat is long then you will need wrapping paper, Rice paper or Wax Paperol spray Rubber
Bands - for topknot, or wrapping.

Hair Bows

Knitting needle - for parting the hair down the back

Nail Clippers

All these help to maintain a Healthy Coat, and keep your Yorkie looking great!

Bathing Your Yorkie
Comb out all the matts, and insert a wad of cotton in each ear. Wet your Yorkie down with warm water, but be careful
not to get water in his eyes. Apply soap, and produce a good lather, ( never rub your Yorkies coat ) followed by a good
rinsing. Apply a good conditioner, and let sit on the dog for a few minutes. Rinse your dog really well, and do it one
more time to make sure no residue is left in the coat.

Drying Your Yorkie
Let the water run off, I let my Yorkies stand in the Tub for a few minutes to get rid of the excess water. Wrap your
Yorkie in a towel, and gently squeeze the coat. Turn on your Dryer to warm up a bit, and then start blow drying your
Yorkie. Start on one side of your Yorkie and then blow dry the other side. Do this for the stomach, head, chest and legs.
Gently brush your Yorkie in the direction of the growth of coat, drying the chest downwards. Place your Yorkie on the
table and brush the coat towards you by brushing downwards. Make sure he/she is completely dry. Drying the Yorkie
legs is done by holding the dogs feet, do this as gently as possible. Most Yorkies love to be groomed especially if you
start them with daily brushing, and you should bath them every week. Don't forget, blow-dryers get
Blow-dry your pup at a Far Distance!!!

Grooming the Whiskers
If your Yorkies whiskers get dirty, between baths you may rinse them off in a small bowl with dry paper towels.

Eyes
If you have a Yorkie whose eyes run, clean them daily with warm water, and a cotton ball soaked in warm water and
squeezed out. Apply gently. Some people apply a small amount of Vaseline under the eyes, I just clean their eyes daily if
there is a problem.

Ears
Check the ears daily for any problems. Cotton swabs work great dipped in Olive Oil, or you can use paper towels. DO
NOT dig down into the Yorkies ear, as this may cause damage because their ears are very sensitive. Twirl the cotton
swab instead of rubbing inside the ear. To trim the hair inside the ears you may use Eye Brow tweezers but they are
very sharp, and care must be taken when pulling out any hair that is inside the ear canal. You might want to ask your
Vet to help you with this. Only the outsides of the
Yorkies ears are trimmed with scissors. You have to be very careful
as the yorkies ears are very thin and you can easily cut a piece of the ear off. You might want to leave this to a
professional if you don't have much experience grooming yorkies.

Here's a little fun fact for you: Did you know that the Yorkshire Terrier gets along amazingly with cats? Why,
it's the terrier within the dog that is curious like a cat. Got a cat? Get a Yorkie! Got mice? Get a Yorkie! Got
cockroaches...Better call your exterminator!

Don't forget to exercise your yorkie. I recommend walking or running over skateboarding!

You don't want your yorkies

Along with getting your
yorkie accustomed to
brushing, a nylabone is ideal
for keeping tartar build-up
off your pups teeth. Cowhide
bones are dangerous, small
pieces can be ingested and
caught in the intestines
causing severe health issues.

Plaque is formed by the food debris and
bacterial deposits left on teeth. Due to
the high carbon dioxide and PH levels in
the mouth, minerals precipitate quickly on
the plaque to form calculus. Brushing
your dogs teeth regularly, will help
diminish plaque formation.
