The Yorkshire Terrier,  affectionately known as
"Yorkies" offer BIG personalities in small packages.
Though members of the Toy Group, they are
Terriers by nature, and are brave, determined,
investigative and energetic! They have long, and
luxurious blue and tan coats. This portable pooch is
one of the most popular breeds according to the
AKC Registration Statistics.

Named for the English city from which they
originally hail, Yorkshire Terriers were used in the
nineteenth century to catch rats in clothing mills.
Surprisingly enough, in it's beginnings, the Yorkie
belongs to the working class, especially the
weavers; in fact, facetious comments were often
made about how the dog's fine, silky coats were the
ultimate product of the looms.  Eventually, the
breed left the workforce and became a companion
animal to the families of European high society.

IS A YORKSHIRE TERRIER RIGHT
FOR YOU?

Yorkies are easily adaptable to all surroundings,
travel well and make suitable pets, for many homes.
Due to their small size, they require limited
amounts of exercise, but need daily interaction with
people. Their long coats require daily brushing,
unless you decide to keep your yorkie in a short
puppy cut. It is also an ideal situation, that your
yorkie puppy has a suitable mate to play and
interact with while your away at the office. It's ideal
for you to find litter mates, someone they have
allready been socialized with. This makes their new
environment easier to adapt to, since they have a
"partner - in - crime" to investigate their new home
with.

IDENTIFICATION

Your Yorkie should have attached to his collar, an
identity tag giving the dogs name and contact
telephone number. However, a puppy needs to be
trained in wearing a collar as he/she will make
attempts in trying to chew the collar off and getting
his lower jaw snagged, this could cause possible
suffocation. The ideal situation would be for you to
have your puppy microchipped and/or tatooing are
other forms of identification. The tattoo takes the
form of a number which is put inside the ear. The
number is then recorded on their registration
papers so no mistake can be made regarding the
dog's identity. Some believe that the tatoo is
unsightly - especially so in a prick-eared dog.
Microchipping can be done through your vet, who
will inject a tiny chip into your dog's body - usually
between the shoulder blades. The chip has it's own
unique number which can be identified by passing
an electronic scanner over the dog's body. The
number can then be checked against a register to
find the owner's contact details. Microchipping is
ideal in situations of a lost or stolen pet. This way,
when the person checks your dog into a
veterinarian, he will automatically run  a scanner
over the dog bearing YOUR information. In this
case, it is to your advantage that the information
you gave them, will have the benefits of reuniting
your family member back with you!

Never give a Yorkie cow's milk; it causes diarrhea,
and what a mess it is to clean-up! Only give goat's
milk or a milk supplement for puppies (such as
Lactol). You can find puppies/weaning powdered
milk in your favorite pet store.

PRESCRIPTION PETS

In the therapeutic arena, there is a growing
appreciation for the roles that companion animals
can play in institutions and in the world at large. Dogs
have long been used as a source of support for
troubled children and for psychiatric patients, and
today, many volunteers take their pets to visit local
nursing homes. Assistance dogs serve as surrogate
eyes, ears, or legs for thousands of people with
disabilities. Yorkies are wonderful for this type of
work because of their small size. People absolutely
love sitting with a Yorkie on their lap, what great
unconditional love!

THE BEAUTIFUL YORKSHIRE TERRIER
There is nothing more beautiful and rewarding than a Yorkie, with
his gleaming coat and sassy walk; he is a joy to watch and a joy to
own. Loyalty, devotion, and a zest for life are all part and parcel of
this little dog. Beautiful to look at, active as a kitten, vivacious as
the most "perky pom" the Yorkshire Terrier is the acme of Toydog
virtue and perfection, looked at from every angle. With a life-
expectancy of up to 15 or more years, this makes this little dog an
excellent long-term companion. He has a friendly disposition and a
cheerful personality. Easy to train and agreeable to all, he makes
a fine partner for most people. His diminutive size means the
Yorkie is fairly inexpensive to keep - though he imagines himself
to be much larger than he actually is. His size is very convenient
and often allows him privileges that larger dogs sometimes don't
have. For example, I have often stayed in hotels where dogs are
not allowed, and I have been allowed to take my Yorkies in once
the staff have seen the size of the dogs. The fact the Yorkie does
not shed his coat may also appeal to you - especially if members
of your family suffer from allergies. If you've ever owned a dog that
sheds and leaves his trails behind everywhere he goes in your
home, you are in for a real treat with this breed! The non-
shedding factor in yorkies is one of the many bonuses that come
with these adorable little furbal
ls. For further information on our
Yorkies, feel free to contact us below, we look forward to meeting
you and your family!
