"When a man's best friend is his dog, that dog has a problem!" LET'S TALK ABOUT "PERSONALIZED" BOARDING FOR YOUR DOG The people who board their dogs here, are usually our friends, family or clients who have purchased a puppy from us. Feel free to ask me questions such as; "Are the toys or bedding welcome? Your answer, definitely YES! If Fido is use to sleeping in a kennel or a bed or on a blanket at your home, let's continue the same treatment here while your away. How will Fido be exercised? What will you feed Fido? I like to keep them on their same diets, so please bring their food that they eat on a day to day basis, also if your pet has his favorite snacks or toys, by all means, please bring those too. Talk about safety features. Discuss frankly any qualms you may have about boarding. I will appreciate your frankness and interest. I watch 1-2 dogs at a time, we are not licensed and want you to understand this is more a small favor we do for a handful of people, mostly our friends. It's a very PERSONALIZED Service you will Love! I will contact a veterinarian if I feel it is called for. If Fido does require veterinary aid while he is with us, you should be aware that you as Fido's Owner are financially responsible for such aid. Discuss before boarding, any medication or special care Fido might need. Most kennels offer a certain amount of individual care (playing with, talking to, petting, snacks all for extra charges). Here with me, they get attention all day long! During boarding, it is possible that dogs sometimes step in their stools or urine & become dirty. This can happen in the cleanest of kennels! We always bathe our guests as part of our service to you before they go home. We ask you call us at ~ least 2 hours prior to pick-up ~ so we can bathe your pooch before picking up. Make certain you understand the rate structure for all services at other boarding facilities and the hours of operation. The fee for boarding not only includes the care of your pet, but for the peace of mind that goes with knowing that Fido is safe and with someone you can trust. Besides, at a flat rate of $20 per day/per dog, it doesn't get easier then that! The daily fee includes feeding, playing, comforting, medication dispensing, making Fido comfortable in a new place, snacks and so much more! Shop around the internet, I have seen many places around the Phoenix area that charge $27.00-$65.00 per day. One Scottsdale boarding facility charges $44.00/night for the first dog, $22.00 for the second dog & $15.00 for the third dog. That's a total of $81.00/day. At the end of the week that would run $616.00 plus tax and that still doesn't include all the extras they charge. A WORKING PARTNERSHIP Let us suppose that you do choose to board your pet. Boarding is a shared responsibility. As a responsible pet owner ther are a few things you must attend to before bringing Fido into board. First, make certain ALL immunizations are current, including the parainfluenza vaccine for protection against tracheobronchitis. Your pet should be free of internal and external parasites and not have been exposed to any contagious diseases. Do not feed Fido for at least 4 hours prior to kenneling to minimize the possibility of stomach upset. Boarding at a HOME is the best alternative, but separation from master and/or being in a strange surroundings can produce a little stress in your dog, and stress can result in lowered resistance and sometimes even temporary changes in behavior. Be sure to inform Sharon of any special idiosyncrasies or medical problems Fido may have, such as a history of epilepsy or fear of thunder, etc., that may aid her in keeping Fido healthy and happy. Dogs should be prepared psychologically for boarding. It's best, of course, to begin with a pup as soon as the immunization program is complete. Puppies usually learn very quickly to enjoy boarding! Some kennels offer "daycare" services, enabling you to leave your dog for a few hours at a time. This is an excellent way to introduce your dog to boarding. After just a few visits, Fido accepts his "other home" as a normal way of life! How awesome is that! As your becoming more aware by reading, we offer Grooming Services as well. I prefer to work Monday through Friday and explain to people that it's easy to drop Fido off here before they go to work. What this also does for Fido, is create a confidence within himself of the environment here. That way when you go on that 2 or 3 week vacation, you have no reservation about leaving him here in this wonderful home away from home experience! Then simply, when it's time to wrap things up at the office, swing by and pick Fido up, this also Frees YOUR weekend up and your free to do what you want instead of running all those errands! The psychological preparation of a dog for boarding (and also for helping him develop a healthy personality) also includes getting him used to new people and experiences (socialization). This is probably most easily accomplished by taking them through obedience classes and occasionally boarding him with me, even if it's a couple hours a month, why? You are slowly introducing him to me, his surroundings so that when he stays here a week or two while you and your family are on vacation, not only will he trust me, but you will be confident knowing he enjoys his stay here. Naturally, a dog who is relaxed about boarding is more likely to board well. It almost goes without saying that a pet owner should not moan or cry over their dog staying at a new place The greatest thing about boarding here, is you stick with one person and your dog begins to trust her and knows her and is comfortable knowing his surroundings. Now that awesome! UNDERSTANDING THE BOARDING ENVIRONMENT You should understand the possible effects of stress on a dog and not be shocked if, while your dog is boarding, he develops tracheobronchitis or, occasionally, intestinal problems. You should be aware that some dogs carry viruses in their systems for months and begin to show symptoms only after being subjected to a stress situation. In other words, they can 'catch' a disease from themselves. Sometimes temporary behavior changes can occur as a result of unfamiliar surroundings. For example, Fido may tear up the bed he has slept in for years, or 'Killer' (usually the rowdy scourge of the neighborhood) turns into a little lamp. Eating habits change under stress, and all dogs assimilate their food differently. Some will eat like canaries at home and like vultures at boarding facility. They may put on a few pounds. Others can lose weight though eating well or lose weight by not eating enough. Boarding life can be very exciting, and some dogs lose weight because they run the weight off as they charge around barking at other dogs and having a wonderful time. These dogs often go home exhausted but happy, and sleep alot the first couple of days at home. All of the preparation by the pet owner merely points out that they should recognize that successful boarding depends not only upon the person sitting for your dog, but also upon how well the owner prepares their dog for the experience. That is why it's important to do doggie daycare every once in a while, it will really put your mind at ease. NOW THAT FIDO IS HOME AGAIN ! When Fido is picked up, he will be very excited to see you. Dogs do not have a sense of time, so it would be just as happy to see you if you left him for 5 minutes or 5 days. Please don't feed him (though he will act hungry once back on familiar turf) for at least 2 or 3 hours, and then be careful not to overfeed him. Also, excitement will cause Fido to pant a lot, lose body water and be thirsty. Give him a few ice cubes to tide him over until feeding time. Again, in his excited state, excessive food and water consumption can create problems like vomiting or diarrhea, and you know you don't enjoy cleaning up either mess! So, just take it easy with him, he's just thrilled to have you back home! (WE DO NOT BOARD OR GROOM PITBULLS, BOXERS, DOBERMANS, MASTIFFS) We guarantee your dog will Receive the treatment! NOTE: Most dogs we board are family and friends. If your looking for a boarding facility that is licensed with Veterinarian care, etc. You will be expected to pay a minimum of $40 on up a night.
